54. Linux forerunner: UNIX. The Unix computer operating system was originally developed by AT&T Bell Labs in in the 1970's. AT&T was a publicly own monopoly at that time and it distributed tapes with copies of the OS written in the "C" language (also developed by Bell Labs) which could be compilied to run on any hardware. Many variants of Unix were developed, some of which were not comptible with each other, and some of which charged a fee for their usage. Eventually a young Finnish computer scientist named Linus Torwalds reverse engineered a kernal (the essential core for an OS) that was compatible with the various OS utilities (compilers, sort routines, etc.) developed by the Free Software Foundation. Torwalds named his product Linux ("Linus' Unix") he began distributing it for free and it has since become the standard OS on many types of hardware.
When I worked in IT systems management, Linux was the OS that was most prevalent on the hardware. I was pretty proficient in Linux, but I've pretty much forgotten all I knew!
